One of the things that really pisses me off as a person is when a company pretends to have your best interest at heart. Ethically, I just have a BIG problem with people trying to make a sale by emotionally manipulating you. It drives me crazy!
In researching for Mattress Buying 101, I came upon a literal ton of websites that sell mattresses direct to the end consumer. I have no problem with capitalism. I love competition. At the end of the day, competition keeps businesses honest and prices low. I especially loved looking at all the flashy web sites, extra coupons, and email savings clubs. This is were it stopped for me however.
Most of these retailers offered a "Mattress Buying Guide" in order to help you find your next mattress. Can someone please explain to me how this educates and helps the average consumer? My favorite example had the customer break their purchase into 4 steps. They were:
That's it! Magically you have a new bed and their "buying guide" has saved the day!
Sorry, but no. I detail step-by- step in my book how to go through the purchase process in a logical manner without falling into traps like this. Believe me, there is not a "Mattress Buying Guide" that will pick out the perfect mattress for you without you putting in the time and effort to find the right mattress for your body. And the next time a retailer wants to give you a "guide" to help you with your purchase decision, be sure to offer payment in the same grains of salt that "guide" should be taken with.
