Below are some questions and answers I get asked on a regular basis. These were more common than some others so I thought it might help to have them here for you to read through.
Q: Is there any correlation between price and comfort?
A: Yes and no. There is definitely a major difference in comfort as it pertains to the cheaper end of the spectrum. Manufacturers use cheaper foams and coils in promotional pieces that ensure the bed is not as comfortable as their more expensive models. There is a definite cut-off though. At a certain point there is so much foam used for the comfort layers that another $1000 isn't going to buy any more comfort. More foam means more money, not necessarily more comfort.
Q: What are all the mattress size dimensions? Is a California King bigger than a regular King mattress?
A: Here are the dimensions of all mattress sizes available in the US:
Twin: 38" x 74"
Twin Extra Long: 38" x 80"
Full: 54" x 74"
Queen: 60" x 80"
Split Queen: 30" x 80" (2)
King: 76" x 80"
Split King: 38" x 80" (2)
California King (Cal King): 72" x 84"
Split Cal King: 36" x 84" (2)
A California King is more narrow and longer than a King size mattress. It is designed for those about 6' 4” tall or taller. They contain the exact same amount of material.
Split queens and split kings are designed for use on motorized or adjustable bases. Splitting the mattress into 2 separate pieces allows each person to adjust their side of the bed independently of the other side. This means that one can prop up to read a book or watch TV as the other side lays flat for sleeping.
Q: Should I replace the foundation even though it looks perfectly fine?
A: Yes. The mattress you buy is designed to work with that specific foundation. Unless you are using a platform bed that has multiple touchdowns to the ground down the center of the wooden frame, you should buy the foundation that goes with the new mattress. Ask to see a low profile foundation if the mattress height is an issue. A split foundation should also be available for older houses with narrow stairs.
